The 6th Asian Beach Games Open in Sanya, Hainan

(ACTV, Australia) Sanya, Hainan, April 22 – According to the Sixth Asian Beach Games Organizing Committee, the 6th Asian Beach Games officially opened in Sanya, Hainan Province, on April 22. This is the first international multi-sport event held after the Hainan Free Trade Port launched island-wide independent customs operations, and it also marks the second time China has hosted the Asian Beach Games.

At 20:00 on April 22, the opening ceremony of the 6th Asian Beach Games commenced at Sanya Yasha Park. To dynamic melodies, sports delegations from all 45 member National Olympic Committees of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) marched into the venue in succession. The Games feature 14 sports and 62 events, with over 1,600 athletes participating. The programme includes Olympic-related sports such as beach volleyball and 3×3 basketball, traditional folk sports with deep cultural roots like dragon boat racing and beach kabaddi, as well as trendy sports that appeal to young people, such as teqball.

China will send 171 athletes to compete in 13 sports and 60 events—all disciplines except beach kabaddi—representing the country’s highest participation rate since it began taking part in the Asian Beach Games.

Alongside the Asian Games and the Asian Winter Games, the Asian Beach Games is a multi-sport event organised by the OCA. Since its inaugural edition in Bali, Indonesia, in 2008, the Games have become the highest-level competitive platform for beach sports in Asia.

Unlike the Asian Games, which focus more on conventional indoor and outdoor competitions, the core character of the Asian Beach Games lies in leveraging natural coastal settings such as beaches and the ocean to create a distinctive format that integrates sport, nature and leisure, combining athletic excellence, spectator appeal and recreation.
